Reclaiming Witchcraft in Romania
In Romania, the term “witch” comes with a complicated history, colored by a deep-rooted shame and often misunderstood by those who conflate it with Romani culture. As Romanians, we’re frequently mistaken for the Romani people, who themselves have a rich and powerful magical tradition. While Romani culture is a distinct and important thread within Romania’s tapestry, it’s often confused with Romanian folk practices, leaving both communities feeling misrepresented and unseen. We believe it’s time to reframe the conversation and offer clarity around these ancient, often misinterpreted, paths.
Why “Witches’ Tavern”?
We wanted a name that held both our roots and our aspirations. Witches’ Tavern is a name that evokes the kind of gathering place we dream of—a virtual tavern where witches of all backgrounds can feel safe, supported, and connected. Our site may be in English to include a wider community, but we carry our Romanian spirit proudly, using our platform to build awareness and foster a sense of belonging for Romanian witches and all those who feel drawn to our sacred practices.
